23rd July 2017 – Mersey Basin Water Blitz

Following on from the massive success of our first ever Water Blitz 2016 – will be again be asking members to test the water in their local stream/river/canal for Ammonia, Phosphate and Nitrate using simple easy to use test kits. The data we collect will give us a great snap shot of river health in our region. This is a great opportunity to take part in an amazing Citizen Science Project …. 16th July 2017 – Rochdale Canal Clean Up Event – meet at 10am outside the Royal Oak, 496 Oldham Rd, Failsworth, M35 0EH – a morning litter picking and generally tidying up the Rochdale Canal where it runs through Failsworth. Everyone welcome to join us and the Canal & Rivers Trust at this community event.

18th June 2017 – BIO BLITZ – Phillips Park – Prestwich 

We will spend the day recording as many aquatic species as possible at a couple of locations in Phillips Park Whitefield – in partnership with the Greater Manchester Ecology Unit and the Lancashire Wildlife Trust. 14th June 2017 – Installation of “in-channel deflectors” on the Birkin Brook and Mobberly Brook, Knutsford, Cheshire.    A work party day – to install “in channel” deflectors on the Birkin Brook, Cheshire – designed to improve river bed biodiversity – cleaning silted gravels – creating habitat for invertebrates and fish.

10th June 2017 – Invertebrate Sampling Training – Smithill Hall, Smithills Dean Road, Bolton BL1 7NP

Learn how to identify and record river invertebrates, and how to use this knowledge to monitor river health/water quality. Please contact volunteer@merseybasin.org for details of how to register for this course.

27th May 2017 – Bolton Bio-Blitz – Smithills Estate – Barrow Bridge Road, Bolton, Lancashire BL1 7NH

Our first Bio Blitz of the summer – we have been invited to take part in an event organised by the Woodland Trust at their nature reserve at Smithills Estate in Bolton. As part of their bio-blitz event we will be looking to record as many species of fish/insect/invertebrate/bird as we can on the Boltons Dean Brook – water quality is high and we expect to find a great variety of wildlife. Everyone welcome to come along to our purple gazebo, log in and get out recording wildlife.
